How to show the battery percentage on a Mac

Updated June 2026 · 2 min read

To show the battery percentage on a Mac, open System Settings → Control Center, scroll to Battery, and turn on “Show Percentage.” The number then appears next to the battery icon in the menu bar. On older macOS, click the battery icon and choose “Show Percentage.”

By default, recent versions of macOS hide the battery percentage. Here’s how to bring it back.

macOS Ventura, Sonoma and later

  1. Open menu → System Settings.
  2. Click Control Center in the sidebar.
  3. Scroll to Battery and turn on Show Percentage.

Older macOS (Monterey and earlier)

Click the battery icon in the menu bar and choose Show Percentage.

Want more than a number?

The built-in readout is just a percentage. Mac 4 Breakfast lets you choose what the menu bar shows — percentage, true time remaining, live watts, temperature or health — and even two metrics at once, in °C or °F. If the percentage keeps changing oddly, it may be worth checking your battery health.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Mac battery percentage missing?

It’s off by default on recent macOS. Turn it on in System Settings → Control Center → Battery → Show Percentage. Desktop Macs with no battery won’t show it at all.

Can I show time remaining instead of percentage?

macOS removed the built-in time estimate years ago. A dedicated app can put time-remaining, watts or temperature back in the menu bar.

Can I show two battery metrics at once?

Not with the built-in menu bar. Apps like Mac 4 Breakfast let you display two metrics side by side — for example percentage and temperature.
